Cheap milk prices demanded by Supermarkets are creating the need for intensive and baseline farms which is not always in the best interest of the cows.
The Beechdean Farm is not a cow factory. We believe that happy cows produce quality milk and their welfare is our main concern.
Our cows graze the beautiful Chiltern Hills throughout the summer months and are happily housed inside during the winter.
When inside, they are bedded on comfortable cow mattresses with sawdust or in straw yards. The breeding programme is complex and has cow welfare at its heart.
In the Dairy world, all cows have a passport which gives them an identification number pertaining to the number on their ear tag. So cows are mostly known by numbers. At Beechdean, however, the staff know most of the cows by name. The favourites being:
Ivy, (number 87)
Brittannia, (number 53)
and dear old Daisy (number 237).
They are all characters to us and no two cows look the same!
