The Milking Herd

We are currently milking about 230 Jersey Cows but gradually increasing this over the next 12 months to reach 260.

The Ladies are milked twice a day and on average our cows provide us with 18 litres of milk each day. Milking begins at 5am and again at 3pm.

Our parlour takes 20 cows at a time. Clusters are put manually on to each cow which milks them automatically. The milk is drawn out of the 4 teats on the udder and passed by tube to the milk tank, which cools it immediately to 4 degrees centigrade. The clusters remove themselves when the cow is thoroughly milked. The udders are then sprayed with iodine for cleanliness and health reasons.

The average Jersey cow produces milk for approximately 6/7 years. Our oldest cow is currently 14 years old and still going strong!
