The farm calves all year round. This means that on average we have about 10 very pretty calves born each month.
The cows are mainly Artificially Inseminated but many are put to our homebred quality pedigree Jersey bulls.
Gestation is 9 months and 1 week.
Calving all year round enables a constant supply of milk rather than peaks and troughs and allows careful observation and care of each individual calf. The calves are weaned from their mothers after a day or 2 and hand reared in "nurseries". The calves are fed their mother's colostrum (early milk) for 5 days. We are able to monitor their milk intake and healthy progress carefully.
The female calves are called Heifers. They will produce their 1st calf at approximately 26 months. They are called Heifers until they produce their 2nd calf.
